TechPortfolio (“we”, “us”) publishes news, analysis and free financial tools at techportfolio.net. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we protect it and the choices you have. We follow Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).
What we collect
- Newsletter sign-ups. When you subscribe to the TechPortfolio briefing, we collect your email address, along with the page and form you signed up from so we know which parts of the site readers find useful.
- Messages you send us. If you email us, we keep your name, email address and whatever you choose to include in your message.
- Visit statistics. We use Jetpack Stats, provided by Automattic, to count visits and see which pages are read. It processes information such as the pages you view, the site that referred you, your browser and device type, and your approximate location derived from your IP address.
- Technical and security data. Our hosting provider, WP Engine, and our network and security provider, Cloudflare, process technical information such as IP addresses and browser details to deliver the site, keep it fast and protect it from attacks.
What we do not collect
Our calculators run entirely in your browser. The numbers you enter are not sent to us, stored or shared. We do not sell personal information, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
How we use your information
- To send the newsletter you asked for.
- To reply to your messages and consider story pitches and partnership enquiries.
- To understand which articles and tools are useful so we can improve the site.
- To keep the site secure and working properly.
- To meet legal obligations.
Your consent and the newsletter
We only send the newsletter to people who sign up for it. Every issue includes a way to unsubscribe, and you can also unsubscribe at any time by emailing info@techportfolio.net. We will stop sending it promptly.
Cookies and similar technologies
The site uses a small number of cookies and similar technologies that are needed to run it securely and to measure visits. Some articles include content from other services, such as embedded posts from X (formerly Twitter) or videos from YouTube. Those services may set their own cookies when you view that content, under their own privacy policies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some features may not work as intended.
Who we share information with
We share personal information only with the service providers that help us run the site, and only as needed for that purpose: WP Engine (hosting), Cloudflare (network and security) and Automattic (Jetpack Stats). We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.
Where your information is stored
Some of our service providers store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States. When that happens, the information is subject to the laws of that country, and those authorities may be able to access it.
How long we keep it
We keep newsletter subscriber details until you unsubscribe, and messages for as long as needed to deal with them. Visit statistics are kept in summary form. We delete or anonymize personal information when we no longer need it.
How we protect it
We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections and restricted access to the site’s administration. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to respond promptly if something goes wrong.
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or withdraw your consent and ask us to delete it, subject to any legal requirements. To make a request, email info@techportfolio.net. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
